I find first that although the threaded spindles have to move freely though the guide ring, they do need to be reasonably tight otherwise the arms fall all over the place. Start with it fully closed. Once the 4 arms are inside, move them outwards one by one a little at a time by inserting fingers as well and pushing out. Tighten the nuts up as you go. This can be repeated until the maximum stretch is achieved. I have found it necessary to push the unit in to its full depth at all times otherwise it has a tendency to pop out. It does have a great affect and everyone I have tried it on is astounded by the result. I also find that the threads need to be oiled after washing.
